Who: Rotary e-Club of Lulu Island
What: Coffee
When: September 20, 2017
Where: City Hall
Hosted by: Bill and Elsa
Welcome and Introductions
On discussion with members, it was felt that we should be hosting more “bricks and mortar” meetings. While members are engaged in various causes and events in the community, the Rotary e-Club of Lulu Island should be physically meeting more often.
Therefore, for the balance of 2017, we will be meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, and two members will “host” the meeting. The Hosts will advise the venue, agenda and activities of that meeting.
Next Meetings:
October 18 Hosted by Dale and ?
November 15 Hosted by Tony and Tina
December 20 Hosted by Savannagh and Wayne
Online e-Meeting about Polio
District 5070 hosted an online meeting across Canada on Wednesday, September 27th. Interested parties could log onto their site from 5PM Pacific (6PM Mountain, etc.) to join the discussion.
Sacred Valley Project
Kevin will be travelling to Peru in October and has connected to a Charity through Pack for a Purpose ( which:
-is dedicated to improving access to education for young women from ages 13 through 18 years old. These women come from low-income families in remote, mountain communities of the Sacred Valley.
This project provides safe and nurturing accommodations, educational resources, and nutritious meals for these young women so that they may continue their secondary education and become knowledgeable and empowered women.
The Sacred Valley Project requests educational and medical supplies. In Peru, families are responsible for supplying books and pencils and bags for their children, and so in many larger families, there is not enough for the younger children or the girls to go to school.
The easiest way to get educational supplies is to purchase them in the larger cities.
It was discussed and decided to send USD$200 with Kevin to purchase supplies in Cusco and donate the the Sacred Valley Project.
Rotary e-Club of Lulu Island Vests
Tony suggested we make Rotary e-Club of Lulu Island vests for members to wear at events. It was discussed and decided that a three-season vest would be nice to have. Tony will look at purchasing and bring samples to the next meeting.
Thoughts to use the e-Club of District 1070 logo or similar...
Website and Events
It was suggested that everyone look at the upper right corner of the home page in the Member Login. Everyone has a Log-in name and Password assigned (please see Eric or Kevin). Members should log in and change their Password to a more secure and easily-remembered one !
Anyone can post to the website and add events or requests for help.
If not familiar or comfortable, then you can e-mail Eric or Kevin with the details of events. Specifically, W4H1 (Who is it for, What is the event, When is the event, Where is the event, How many volunteers do you need)

Jeremy was my neighbour's nephew.  Jeremy's Father is still in jail.  The Foundation provides pajamas and Teddy Bears for the children of women who escape domestic violence to the crisis centres.  They assist with providing counseling for both the Mothers and the children, as well as education aimed at abuse prevention, amongst other support avenues.
It is a good cause and, in my opinion, fits with our goals nicely.  I'd like to hear that you agree.

On April 11th, several Rotary members were on hand to set up for the Friends of the Library Whale of a Book Sale at Thompson Community Centre.

The sale ran Saturday and Sunday, and more Rotary members came on Sunday afternoon to take down, and move books around.

Over 1,200 boxes of books were donated and collected, with over half being sold, re-purposed to other community groups, and the balance taken to recycling.

Sad News from CRCID.  See below.

Sandra Roberts moves that CRCID wind up its operation on March 31, 2014, or at such later date where the ceasing of operation is finalized.    Seconded by: Duncan Conrad

o    Discussion:  How we do this will require further attention.  Board will come back to the membership with the plan and financial requirements .  Opposed:  Bill Feyrer;

The Federal Government has created a new department that absorbed CIDA which funded CRCID.  The new agency is called the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).  Their mandate does not allow for any of their funding to be used for admin purposes.  Completely ignoring the fact that CRCID was formed at the Federal Government's request.  CRCID has no alternative funding and has been given no time to try to put together their own fund raising program.

I have enjoyed being a part of CRCID and I feel they were wronged.  But unfortunately it doesn't matter what I or anyone involved with CRCID thinks.

Pacific Spirit Park

On April 23, 1989 Pacific Spirit Park was named. The important part of this was that Richmond resident Sherry Sakamoto was at the ceremony because she had won the province wide competition to name the park, made up of 1,885 acres that had previously been part to the University of British Columbia Endowment Lands. Sherry explained the name “was inspired by the First Nations belief in the Great Creator and their connection with Mother Earth.. It is the gateway to the Pacific and a spiritual ground to becoming one with nature”. The park is the largest urban park in the world with 34 multiple use trails.

Meeting of January 22nd

Letter to Members:

Dear Rotarian,

2014 is starting across Rotary Zones 24-32 with a little fun - the first ever Zone 24-32 Avenues of Service - Zone Photo Contest.  Your club is part of this Rotary zone.

This is an opportunity for Rotarians to share photos about the service projects and fellowship events your club has held or will hold this Rotary year.

The prizes are simple, boasting rights as the best Rotary photographer, a certificate and the winning photos in each of the Avenues of Service posted on this website and hopefully district websites. Winners will be announced in mid- April.  So get out your SLR, point and shoot or phone camera and click away.

I need your help to share this email with your club members - particularly the members that like to take photos.  Please forward this message to all your club members.

The most important rule of the contest is “have fun”.

  • The photographer must be a member of a Rotary, Rotaract or Interact club in Zone 24 or Zone 32 (your club is in Zone 24-32).
  • Photos submitted must be in JPEG file format with a maximum size of 3 MB and be submitted on or before March 31 2014.
  • Each photographer may submit up to 3 photos that were taken between July 1 2013 and March 31 2014.
  • Each photo will be submit in one of the 5 Avenues of Service that the photo best illustrates.

Letter to Rotary Members:

It is with great sadness that I report that 3 Polio workers were killed in Karachi, Pakistan on January 21, 2014 which has resulted in halting the current immunization campaign.

Pakistan is the only endemic country that had an increase in Polio cases in 2013.  In 2012 they only had 58 cases.  In 2013 they had 91.

Afghanistan dropped from 37 cases in 2012 to only 13 cases in 2013 and Nigeria also saw an improvement from 103 cases in 2012 to 53 cases in 2013.

Non-endemic countries - Somalia, Syria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroon all had a resurgence of Polio cases and are expanding immunization to try to stop the spread of this terrible disease.

STATS - as of January 15, 2014
